How Majestic Is Your Name

July 13, 2025 / David Peterson, Discipleship Pastor

To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
(Psalm 8:1-9, ESV)

The Psalmist is inspired by the Holy Spirit to praise the Lord by name, and should praise Him also!

The Psalmist praises the Lord for His work. In creation we see His power and authority, as well as our unique and .

  • “you have” set your glory above
  • “You have” established strength
  • “you have” set in place
  • “you have” made him
  • “you have” crowned him
  • “you have” given him dominion
  • “you have” put all things

The Psalmist praises the Lord for His work toward us.

  • “you are mindful”
  • “you care for”

We can see that the Psalmist praises the Lord for the person and work of Jesus Christ!

  • Headed to the cross, Jesus received praise as .

15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?” (Matthew 21:15-16, ESV, see also 1 Cor. 1:27)

  • At the cross, Jesus and died for us.

6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (Hebrews 2:6–9, ESV, emphasis added)

  • At the cross, Jesus was over death.

25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. (1 Corinthians 15:25–28, ESV, see also Ephesians 1:19-22)

  • After the cross, we follow the of Jesus.

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (Philippians 2:5–10, ESV)
