1 Thessalonians 5:12-24

¹² We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, ¹³ and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. ¹⁴ And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. ¹⁵ See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. ¹⁶ Rejoice always, ¹⁷ pray without ceasing, ¹⁸ give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. ¹⁹ Do not quench the Spirit. ²⁰ Do not despise prophecies, ²¹ but test everything; hold fast what is good. ²² Abstain from every form of evil.

²³ Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴ He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. (ESV)

Give thanks in all circumstances . . .

1. Because it is God’s that we should do so.

2. Because God is over all of our circumstances.

¹¹ In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, (Ephesians 1:11, ESV)

²⁸ And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28, ESV)

3. Because God us – “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4).

4. Because God us – he paid the ransom to secure our release from the captivity of sin when Jesus died on the cross (Mark 10:45).

5. Because God’s grace is for us in every circumstance (2 Corinthians 12:9).

6. Because God will never us or us (John 6:39; Hebrews 13:5).

7. Because we are eternally in God’s love that he has lavished on us in Christ (Romans 8:38-39).

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? ³⁶ As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” ³⁷ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ³⁸ For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39, ESV)
