1 Thessalonians 5:12-24

12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. (ESV)

Give thanks in all circumstances . . .

  1. Because it is God’s that we should do so.

  1. Because God is over all of our circumstances.

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, (Ephesians 1:11, ESV)

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28, ESV)

  1. Because God us – “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4).

  1. Because God us – he paid the ransom to secure our release from the captivity of sin when Jesus died on the cross (Mark 10:45).

  1. Because God’s grace is for us in every circumstance (2 Corinthians 12:9).

  1. Because God will never us or us (John 6:39; Hebrews 13:5).

  1. Because we are eternally in God’s love that he has lavished on us in Christ (Romans 8:38-39).

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39, ESV)
